Many investors purchase a property with other people’s money, known as “other people’s equity.” They take out a mortgage to buy the property and then rent it out. They hope that the rent will cover the mortgage, taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance and other expenses. If the property appreciates in value, the investor can eventually resell or re-mortgage it and turn a profit. If not, the investor could lose money.
